This week has been about starting to clear the house with some urgency, getting our drive back from the gas men (the car is now parked, and I must say that the making-good has been excellent), tradesmen quoting, getting my eyes tested - finally! - and ordering new glasses, because it is five years since I had new ordinary glasses and about eight for my sunglasses...

We've also been watching a lot of DVDs, because TV has been, to put it mildly, crap. Last night we started watching Eregon on FilmFour and gave up twenty minutes in because it was so crap, and put on an early episode of Dalziel and Pascoe instead. Then, at 9 I started watching an episode of the much touted Leverage which I should have liked because it concerned horse racing, but it was so boring I went to bed.

On the other hand, District 9 was by far the best SF (well, Allegory really) film I've seen in a while, and I think a lot better than Moon which beat it for the Hugo. I suspect it worked better on TV than it would have in the cinema.

As part of the house clearing I made some space to put "things to sell" by clearing the spice cupboard of everything that was out of date. The eldest was a jar of sesame seed dating back to 1995. I don't think it had ever been opened. The green waste bin now has a four inch layer of spices and herbs in the bottom. There is some stuff to replace quickly, because we use it, but a lot we will only buy if we need it for a specific recipe.

Oh, and watching a lot of streamed three day eventing last weekend. Team Gold for the eventing, and individual silver for Fox-Pitt. Yeah!

The trouble with buying only the spices you need, when you need them, is that a few years later you have a cupboard full of spice bottles mostly unused and past their use-by date...

I have never found a solution to this dilemma.

Conversation today:

Ina: We need to replace the paprika.
Me: Why? What do we use it for?
Ina: Recipes out of my Hungarian cookery book.... which I haven't used for years. Okay.
