Hugo and Nebula Winners
Flash

I couldn't resist this mene on the Hugo and Nebula award winning novels I've read.
The results are interesting. I read all the Hugo and Nebula winners up to 1975 when 'The Dispossessed' bored me out of my skull by the end of the third chapter. Maybe I ought to give it another try. (Yes, I do have a (tattered paperback) copy of 'They'd Rather Be Right.' Yes, I have read it. Once.) You will note that there are some other authors I don't attempt to read - by the way, you can't tell that just because I missed one book. I have (mostly) read other books by these authors. Which is why I haven't read these.
Altogether I've read 41 (77%) of the Hugo winners and 25 (60%) of the Nebula winners. I started but didn't finish 6 Hugo winners and 3 Nebula winners - but the 3 Nebula winners were also Hugo winners. I've either quite deliberately not read or not got around to reading 6 Hugo winners and 14 Nebula winners, and oddly enough, there are no repeat titles in these 20 books.
Though I have extended the meme a bit to 'Read' (Bold), 'Not Read' and 'Didn't finish' (Italic) I was struck by how much I wanted, sometimes, to add the words 'Never again' to 'Read'. Also, there are a half a dozen books where I could have said, 'Read half a dozen times' and one or two of those - comfort reads, for the most part - to which I might have added, 'But didn't deserve the award.'

What's now worrying me is that I own somewhere in the region of 1,000 fantasy and SF paperbacks, although I suspect if I had a serious weeding session, I would only own about half of those, and still have less than 50% of the above ...

Jean and I have serious weeding sessions based on the "Are you ever going to read this again," principle every year, so we somehow keep the SF and fantasy down to about 1,000. The detective and thriller stuff is more problematical, as all the vintage stuff is on the "Keep and replace when possible by hardback" list - and we never, ever, throw away our reference stuff. (I sometimes wonder what a psychologist would make of a row that starts at one end with 'Modern Ritual Magic' and ends with a complete Richard Dawkins collection...

Time was when I read 250-300 books a year (I have the lists!), but now its much more likely to be less than 100.

Hilary and I have kept our fiction collections separate - we have completely different tastes and there were few duplicates - but have pretty much merged the non-fiction now. And yes, we too have a wide variety of just-for-research tomes that might just one day come in useful again ...

I don't know how many books I read - it depends on what else is happening (and the length of the book!) - but I probably average one a week, although some of that is re-reading. I started keeping a brief resume of the book a year or so back and now have lots and lots of bits of paper - one day I'll get around to creating the database ...
